Built for students who still take notes by hand.
CamNotes is a camera-first AI note-taking app that turns photos of handwriting into clean digital notes, AI summaries, flashcards, and practice quizzes.
Why we built CamNotes
Most students still take notes by hand. The research is unambiguous about why: handwriting forces you to compress and rephrase information in real time, which builds stronger conceptual understanding than typing word-for-word (Mueller & Oppenheimer, Psychological Science, 2014). But once class ends, those handwritten notes are stuck on paper — unsearchable, unshareable, and missing the active-recall layer that turns notes into actual learning.
CamNotes exists to bridge the two. You keep the cognitive benefit of handwriting. We do the busywork of converting your notes into searchable text, AI summaries, flashcards, and practice quizzes — the formats cognitive science says are most effective for retention.
The principles we work from
- Augment, don’t replace. We build tools that amplify how students already study. We will never write your essay, answer your exam, or take a class for you.
- Privacy is the default. We don’t train AI models on your notes. Your scanned content is processed to provide the service and is not shared with third parties beyond the infrastructure required to deliver it.
- Honest defaults. The free tools are genuinely free. The paid plan exists for unlimited scans and the full AI study stack. No dark patterns, no surprise charges.
- Active recall over passive review. Every feature is designed to nudge students toward retrieval-based study (testing yourself), which research shows produces ~50% larger long-term gains than re-reading (Karpicke & Roediger, Science, 2008).
The CamNotes Team
CamNotes is built by a small team that cares about education, AI, and design. We split our time between making the app work for students actually using it, talking to learners about what’s broken in their workflow, and writing the guides on this site.
Posts on this site are credited to “CamNotes Team” — they reflect our collective view, edited by whoever has the strongest background on the topic. If you want to reach a specific person, email hello@camnotes.com and we’ll route it.
Editorial standards
Every research claim we publish is tied to a primary source. Statistics we cite carry a journal or report citation directly in the page. Product claims about CamNotes (accuracy ranges, speed, supported features) are tested before publication and updated when the product changes.
Where we disagree with conventional advice, we say so. Where we don’t know something, we say that too.
What we’re working on
The CamNotes app is currently in pre-launch. The web tools — the handwriting to text converter, the AI note summarizer, and the flashcard generator — are live now. The full app, with camera scanning, unlimited AI tools, organization, and progress tracking, is launching to waitlist members first.
